How Much Does It Cost to Rent a Tuk Tuk in Sri Lanka?

Tuk tuk rental is one of the best-value ways to travel Sri Lanka once you understand what goes into the price. Here's the honest, all-in breakdown for 2026.

Daily rental rates

• Classic Tuk — from $14/day. The iconic manual Bajaj, cheapest and most characterful.
• Convertible Tuk — from $20/day. Fold-down roof for open-air coastal drives.
• Electric Tuk — from $25/day. Automatic, zero-emission, 150 km range, easiest to drive.

Rates drop the longer you rent — a two-week trip has a much lower daily rate than a three-day hire, because short rentals are less attractive for the local owners who supply our tuk tuks.

What's included in the price

Unlike many rentals where the headline price is only the start, ours is genuinely all-inclusive:

• Full motor insurance (you, passengers, vehicle and third parties)
• Unlimited kilometres — no distance caps
• A driving lesson at your hotel
• Permit assistance (the AAC Recognition Permit)

• A road kit: phone holder, charger, spare wheel and tool kit

The costs on top

Hotel delivery fee

A one-off fee to deliver the tuk tuk to your hotel, based on distance from our Negombo base. It's free in Negombo and scales up for far-flung spots like Jaffna or Arugam Bay. This covers both delivery and end-of-rental collection.

Fuel

Tuk tuks are frugal. Expect to spend only a few dollars a day on petrol for typical touring distances — one of the reasons a tuk tuk road trip works out cheaper than hiring a car and driver.

The permit

The AAC Recognition Permit has a modest one-off cost whether you get it yourself or have us arrange it. Budget a little extra if you'd like us to handle it so it's ready on arrival.
