Tuk Tuk vs Car-with-Driver vs Motorbike: Which Is Right for Sri Lanka?
7 min read · Updated 5 July 2026
There are three real ways to tour Sri Lanka independently: drive your own tuk tuk, hire a car with a driver, or rent a motorbike. Each suits a different traveller, and having helped thousands of people on the road, here's our honest comparison — including where a tuk tuk isn't the right answer.
Cost
A car with driver typically runs $50–80+ per day once you include the driver's meals and accommodation. A tuk tuk starts from $14/day plus a few dollars of fuel — between two people that's a fraction of the cost. Motorbikes are cheapest of all for solo riders, but carry the least and can't share the cost.
Freedom
A tuk tuk and a motorbike are equal here: stop anywhere, change plans on a whim, find the roads buses can't. A car with driver is comfortable but you travel on someone else's rhythm, and the spontaneity that makes Sri Lanka special is blunted.
Paperwork
Car-with-driver wins outright — no licence needed at all. A tuk tuk needs your home licence, a physical IDP and the AAC Recognition Permit (we arrange the last one). A motorbike needs a motorcycle category on your licence plus an IDP — which many travellers don't have.
Safety and comfort
A car is safest and air-conditioned — the right call for anyone uncomfortable driving in busy, informal traffic. Between the other two, a tuk tuk's roof, doors-ish frame, stability and low speed make it notably more forgiving than a motorbike, and it shrugs off rain that would end a bike day. Luggage for two fits easily in a tuk tuk; on a bike it's a compromise.
The verdict
- Choose a car with driver if you want maximum comfort, zero paperwork, or you're not confident in the traffic.
- Choose a motorbike if you're a solo, experienced rider with a motorcycle licence and you pack light.
- Choose a tuk tuk if you want the freedom of self-drive with room for two people and luggage, weather protection, and the sheer fun of it — the sweet spot for most couples and friends.
