The Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka for a Tuk Tuk Trip

Sri Lanka's weather confuses people because it has two monsoons hitting opposite coasts at opposite times. Once you understand that, timing your trip is simple: follow the dry coast.

The two-monsoon rule

The Yala monsoon brings rain to the south and west coasts and hill country from roughly May to September. The Maha monsoon brings rain to the north and east from roughly October to January. So there's almost always a dry, sunny coast somewhere — you just point your tuk tuk toward it.

For the south and west coasts + hill country

Best from December to March: calm seas, prime whale watching, sunny beach days. This is peak season, so book ahead. April and November are shoulder months — fewer crowds, mostly good weather.

For the east coast

Best from May to September: while the south-west is wet, Nilaveli, Trincomalee and Arugam Bay are calm, sunny and at their peak — including the surf season at A-Bay.

Month-by-month, in short

• December–March: south and west coasts, hill country. Peak season.
• April & November: inter-monsoon — good almost everywhere, quieter.
• May–September: east coast and the Cultural Triangle.
• October–January: south and west green and lush, occasional showers.
