What to Pack for a Tuk Tuk Road Trip in Sri Lanka

A tuk tuk swallows more luggage than you'd think — two travellers with backpacks fit easily — but packing smart still makes the trip better. Here's what to bring, what to skip, and the three things you absolutely cannot forget.

The non-negotiables: documents

1. 1Your home driving licence.
2. 2Your physical IDP booklet — the single most-forgotten item, and it can't be issued in Sri Lanka.
3. 3Passport, plus your Sri Lanka ETA visa confirmation.

Keep all three in a waterproof pouch that travels with you, not buried in luggage. Your Sri Lankan Recognition Permit joins them at delivery.

Luggage: soft beats hard

Soft duffels and backpacks mould into the tuk tuk's luggage space; rigid suitcases fight it. Two medium soft bags plus daypacks is the sweet spot for a couple. If you're taking the famous hill-country train, we can even shuttle your bags in the tuk tuk while you ride.

Clothing: two climates in one island

• Coast: light, breathable clothes, swimwear, sandals, a sun hat — it's hot and humid.
• Hill country: evenings in Nuwara Eliya and Ella drop to 10–15°C — pack a fleece or light jacket.
• A light rain layer year-round; showers arrive fast and leave faster.
• Modest cover for temples: shoulders and knees covered, easy slip-off shoes.

Useful extras

• Sunscreen and insect repellent (pricier locally).
• A power bank — your tuk tuk has a USB charger, but backup never hurts.
• A dry bag for beach days and blowhole spray.
• A head torch for guesthouse power cuts and pre-dawn safari starts.
• A reusable water bottle — refill stations are increasingly common.

Leave at home

Bulky towels (guesthouses provide), heavy boots (sandals and trainers cover everything), a drone without a permit (regulations are strict), and anything you'd be sad to see dusty — this is a road trip, and the dust is part of the charm.
