Is Your Spanish Driving Licence Valid in Sri Lanka?

5 min read · Updated 10 July 2026

Planning to drive a tuk tuk in Sri Lanka with your Spanish driving licence? The short answer is yes — but your home licence alone is not enough. Travellers from Spain need two additional documents to be road-legal, and one of them regularly catches people out. Here's the complete 2026 picture.

The three documents you need

  1. 1Your Spanish driving licence — with a car / light-vehicle category.
  2. 2A physical International Driving Permit (IDP) — the paper booklet. Digital IDPs are not accepted for tuk tuks in Sri Lanka.
  3. 3A Sri Lankan Recognition Permit from the Automobile Association of Ceylon (AAC), endorsed for three-wheelers.

Getting your IDP in Spain

IDPs for Spanish drivers are issued by the DGT (Dirección General de Tráfico). Book a cita previa at your provincial DGT office or apply through the DGT's online channels. The permit is inexpensive and quick once you have the appointment — the appointment itself is the bottleneck, so book early.

Getting the Sri Lankan Recognition Permit

Since a 2025 policy change, the AAC issues Recognition Permits based on your IDP, which is why the physical booklet matters so much. You have two options: queue at the AAC office in Colombo yourself on arrival, or have us arrange the permit before you land — you simply send a photo of your IDP after booking and it's ready with your tuk tuk. Nearly all our customers choose the second option.

What about scooters and motorbikes?

The rules differ: motorbikes don't need the AAC Recognition Permit, and a digital IDP is accepted for them (with a motorcycle category on your home licence). The stricter requirements above are specific to tuk tuks — don't let mixed advice online confuse the two.

Checklist before you fly

  • Valid Spanish driving licence (car category) — packed.
  • Physical IDP booklet — ordered early and packed.
  • IDP photo sent to us after booking — permit sorted on arrival.
