The Sri Lanka Tuk Tuk Licence & AAC Permit Explained (2026)

The three-document rule

What is the AAC Recognition Permit?

The Automobile Association of Ceylon (AAC) issues a permit that recognises your foreign IDP for use on Sri Lankan roads. Since a 2025 policy change, the AAC issues Recognition Permits based on your IDP — so having the physical IDP booklet first is essential. For tuk tuks the permit carries a three-wheeler endorsement.

Two ways to get the Recognition Permit

Option 1 — Do it yourself in Colombo

Visit the AAC office in Colombo with your licence, physical IDP, passport and passport photos. It's typically issued the same day within a couple of hours, and the office fee is modest. The downside is the time — it means a Colombo trip and a queue on arrival day.

Option 2 — Let your rental company arrange it

This is what most travellers choose. Send us a photo of your physical IDP when you book, and we prepare the Recognition Permit so it's waiting with your tuk tuk on arrival. It costs a little more than the direct office fee, but it removes the single biggest admin headache of the whole trip.

What about motorbikes and scooters?

Different rules: motorcycles and scooters don't require the AAC permit, and a digital IDP is accepted for them. The stricter physical-IDP-plus-permit requirement is specific to tuk tuks. Don't assume the two are the same — many travellers learn this the hard way at pickup.
